  • Relevance of Exams to Actual Work Performed

    Hello,

I am considering switching careers to be an actuary. I currently work as a statistican and have a solid background in math and economics.

A friend of mine who worked as an actuary has discouraged me from making the switch. His argument is that while the exams are quite difficult and require advanced mathematics, the actual work is not very challenging and involves using Excel to sum numbers according to a pre-defined formula. He also argues that the job is very stressful.

I would be grateful if anyone here has similar or dissenting thoughts on this. Note that my friend worked in casualty.

    Thanks,

    David
