I get that part, but what actually is a moment?

The n_th moment of a random variable X is E(X^n). The expected value E(X) is known as the first moment, by definition.

    Moments in plain English

I am working through memorizing the distributions, and the moment generating functions for each, and would be grateful if someone could translate into plain English for what is meant by the moment and what the moment value means.

    Thanks,
